Found a new unsealed copy of Quake 3 Gold, $9.99, at Hastings today. I entered the serial # I found inside and didn't work. I still get invalid cd key message.

Please don't tell me I have to reinstall everything cuz that won't work. The copy I got is windows, no help for my mac.

So you're on mac but you bought a windows edition quake 3? I'm not sure if theres that much of a difference to where you're cd key wouldn't work. I'm not sure though, what you might wanna do is load up f4a first (load quake, then click mod, then f4a) and then put your cd key. See if that helps any.

Most of the q3 cds are hybrid cds so I don't think it matters.. and make sure,, very sure that you type in the right key.. cause I had the same prob one time.. turns out I was puttin in V for Y cause they looked similar so make sure you're entering it right..

Failed to locate resource (A)--------anyone got any ideas on the meaning of that?

Try running pbsetup from this post to get punkbuster updated (there's a link for the osx version there). Could also try removing the q3key file from your baseq3 folder, then enter your key again to make sure the right one is stored.

For future reference for Mac os X peepz. My problem was the pbsetup program would not complete it's auto update feature. It simply stalled, don't know why.

The evenbalance website has a manual update feature. I had to download 3 files for mac os x. They must be in the correct folder. I think all 3 had .htm.webarchive extensions. After saving, strip off the .webarchive extension and put all 3 in the htm folder that's inside the pb folder, which should be in the Quake folder, but not the baseq3 folder.

So there you have it. Hope this isn't too confusing.

This may apply to other platforms. If your pbsetup program stalls, try the manual download, and put those files in the correct directory.

I was having the same illegal cd key problem. I did what CB said above and it worked. Do this: Delete the two files named q3cdkey from ur baseq3 and ur f4a folder. Then hit connect...will give u invalid key msg....then press escape and enter the cd key and i am sure u will be able to get in.
