So, I built a new box with Vista on it, and I'm not certain what the problem is, but I copied everything from my old computer(XP) using a USB transfer cable. This includes quake, I tried it soon after and it started up. Then I started messing with ASE trying to move the files so that ASE would start the game if I clicked on the server. And when I transfered the quake files to the program files x86 local, it stopped working, it gives me a default cfg error now.

I tried putting the CD in and copying the baseq files directly into my computer, because it wouldn't auto start with Vista. It worked once, but then started giving me the same error again.

Any help is appreciated, I wanna get back so I can kill Pucker some more =D.

Have you tried deleting your cfg and then starting quake?
A fresh intall of quake 3?

Its always seemed better for me to do a fresh install of everything when I format my os. Cause the program still has all the same setting when you had it on your old os. Could maybe be a different case with quake 3 though.

Well, therein kind of lies the problem, I would but the Disc isn't formatted for Vista so I'm reduced to opening it and copying whatever data I can from the CD onto the harddrive.

I could delete everything then copy it over, but I'm not certain if that would amount to a clean installation.

Ok, I tried that, I now have no q3config.cfg file in my Arena folder, but I still have one in my Baseq3 folder. I starts now, but when it gets into the game it just sits there, in the intro black screen, I get a mouse but can't do anything. I always have to exit it with Ctrl+Alt+Del and shut it down from the task manager. Then it turns the brightness all the way up ><. But aside from that, it doesn't do anything.

Dude I had the same problem.
I had to disable the firewall and one more thing I can't remeber what it was called. It's what vista does when things change and it pops up saying something is trying to change settins. Then it should work.
My new system wouldn't run Quake or ASE with those on. Try it out it should work.

I just turned off the firewall, and I disabled the User Account Control. Still no change, seems to be a software issue, perhaps I'll just have to buy quake 4 and deal with it, lawl.

As for removing Vista.. I can't really, I don't have the XP disc or anything, the old box is with a friend now, so it seems I'm SoL. Thanks for the help guys.

you could always try buying quake off of steam.. i'm sure steam works well with vista and your q3 would run through that.. i'm not sure though.. so don't take my word for it lol

Hey forgot to mention that I reinstalled Q3 and ASE after I disable those things. That's how I got it to work. I don't really care for Vista. Matter of fact I went back to my old rig for gaming. Which has XP on it. Try that out it might work for you. Pz.
