Dead memory slot?

Hey guys,

I am looking for confirmation on something I have come to believe. I removed my memory the other day to test another ddr2 memory stick I had. When putting the original ones back in, I accidentally slid the memory stick along the inside of the slot a bit while trying to seat it (maybe creating static in the process). Now any memory inserted in that slot does not work. The memory stick is fine, though. I believe I may have killed the slot. Is there a kit out there I could buy to test that slot? tia

The memory that your sticking in, make sure thats its a matching pair. If it was static I couldnt see it just affecting that 1 memory slot, I would say it would have affected teh whole board.

Re: Dead memory slot?

Here are the facts and nothing but the facts.

Pins are not sensitive to electrostatic discharge (esd), CMOS is sensitive to esd.

CMOS stands for complementary metal-oxide semiconductor, it is a class of integrated circuits (IC's). CMOS chips include microprocessor, microcontroller, static RAM, and other digital logic circuits.

If you feel you damaged your memory slot (which is quite probable), you may have physically damaged the solder joints on the board as they are very thin. Quality motherboards are not very expensive compared to the cost of testing device. It will cost a few hundred dollars to buy a slot tester that you will use only once because the memory will change for your next mobo.

Unfortunately, you have to deal with the dead slot or buy a new mobo.

Yeah, I was thinking I might get another motherboard and maybe sell this one on e-bay (of course listing it as having 1 memory slot damaged!). However it's not very old - got it brand new less than two months ago. For this reason I think I might just deal with it for a while - I still have the 1 gig running off of the other two undamaged paired slots.
One question though - my computer would not function if CMOS was damaged, right? Thanks for the input MT!

The memory I was testing was for a friend - it was a 1 gig stick and I took my two 512's out. Computer ran fine with my friends - it showed I was using 1 gig. And I also thought that if it was static it would do more than just damage that one slot. It's very bothersome because I wasn't forceful when replacing my memory after the test, either. I should contact ASUS (so they can tell me i'm sheet out of luck)

ASUS! They are an excellent company. Send them an email or call them. Tell them what happened and they should stand behind there product.

BIOS is a good example of CMOS. If you damaged the bios, you would be screwed. You could just buy a 1 gig stick of ram for about 75 dollars and be happy for now.

Re: Dead memory slot?

If the bios settings were screwed you could reset cmos and that would fix it, or maybe just a bad mobo.

Yeah, from what I could gather I felt ASUS was a good company too. I'll contact them. This is the first time I have bought parts and put together my own computer. Awesome experience! Don't think I did anything to BIOS cause the computer works like normal now, I just have my memory installed into the second matched pair of memory slots. I did think about buying a 1 gig stick (matching it to the other two by company and speed) for the undamaged 3rd slot. Thanks for the input MT!

Yeah I wonder if the motherboard is just a bit wimpy - it's not like I forced the memory back into the slot, I just dragged the contacts on the stick itself inside the slot for about a centimeter until it was seated at the bottom ( I know, that was a dumb lazy thing to do but it was 3 am and I was tired ) I really like the mobo though and if it is a bad mobo I wouldn't hesitate to get the same one.
