How to make a 2nd drive Slave?

Well im using the 40gb one now and everytime i plug in the 60gb one the computer doesnt recognize either drive, when I remove the damaged drive, its all good. I would like to copy the files from the unbootable drive to my current workable one so I can backup stuff onto a dvd.

Seagate Technology - ATA Jumper Settings Anyone make sense of this, and if this doesnt work, is there another way to make the 2nd drive slave so that the computer recognizes both drives.

yeah.. you have to move the jumper on the back of the drive.. similar to that of optical drives.. there should be like an S and an M.. just pull the jumper out from under the M and move it under the S and you should be set.. but if you do need to remove the jumper like the thing says then just pull it out completely I guess..

Here's what the jumpers should look like.. and it's real easy to just pull it out.. there should also be letters above it saying whether it's for the slave or the master..

I think that drive is dead, because I moved the jumpers and stuff and it just made it to where both drives wouldnt load. Anways I have a new problem now, the power switch wont start the computer, this time maybe the power supply is dying now.

//Update

Pcchips M848a Mobo Power - Help! - BuildingPCs.com I think this is what I done, I probably did something to the jumper when i removed the IDE cable that is used for the floppy, which I use for the DVD drive.

Re: How to make a 2nd drive Slave?

Current Update:

After running the guantlet of computer problems yesterday, I tried using another ide cable for the 2nd drive but I accidentally hit the cmos battery which took me a while to figure out how to use the jumpers so the power button would work again.

But when I start up, the computer will not recognize the working hard-drive nor the dvd drive, WTF can I do now? lol

Re: How to make a 2nd drive Slave?

try this man, hook everything back up the way its supposed to be.
take out the cmos battery(im assuming u know to ground yourself before touching the mb)try and start the cpu,u will get an error.turn off cpu, replace the cmos battery and try agian. this will reset your bios to defaut and may fix your issue.
ive had to do this before on someone's rig and it worked.
JUST BE SURE U TOUCH SOMETHING METAL BEFORE YOU TOUCH THE MB!!! AND A FEW TIMES DURING IF IT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

I removed battery, and booted up, no odd error message.

I put the battery back in and move the jumper down and it breaks off because its so damn weak, (btw second jumper to break).

Now I cannot turn the damn thing on, I have no jumpers to move and now it probably wont be able to start again.

The guantlet of computer problems has grown even more.
